Befriender Uganda is a local nonprofit organisation that runs a crisis intervention center at Mulago national referral hospital. We work closely with psychiatrists, social workers and counselors in managing crisis, suicide prevention and research promotion. The organisation was first established in 2009 as a pilot project working partly in Wakiso and Kampala districts targeting mainly the secondary school personnel, youths and women. During this time, 10 schools participated and benefited from our programs. We reinvented ourselves in 2011 in our current home, located at Mulago National referral hospital.
We work to address suicide as a public health problem that no one else is addressing. Our programs and activities are centered towards Crisis intervention and suicide risk assessment in Uganda where at least 15% of total population attempts suicide every year.
Our Mission is to promote help seeking behavior among the suicidal and mentally ill persons in Uganda.
